Kenneth and Catherine Long opened

DownHome Cafe in Canton in 2005. The

family restaurant provides just what it says

it does, friendly service and home-style

cooking like you used to get back home.

“DownHome Cafe is built on Christian

principles,” the Longs said. “Proverbs 3:6

says if we acknowledge God in all our

ways, he will direct our paths. We believe

God led us to start DownHome Cafe and

we believe the reason we’ve been suc-

cessful is that we acknowledge God in

our menu, on our guest checks and at the

front counter.”

It is easy to see why readers picked

DownHome as one of their favorites. The

cafe was voted best home cooking, break-

ing and family friendly restaurant.

Although the Longs have only had

DownHome Cafe in Canton since 2005,

they have been in the restaurant business

all their lives. Mrs. Long grew up working

in her dad’s restaurant in Dallas and Mr.

Long started out working for a national

hamburger chain while still in high school,

eventually becoming a franchisee. “We

sold our franchise and moved back home

to Texas in April, 2005,” he said.

“Catherine and I swore we would never

get back in the restaurant business but

God had other plans,” said Long. “We read

about a restaurant for sale in the

Can-

ton Herald

so, just for grins, we went

to look at it. We both had such a strong

feeling about it that we bought the restau-

rant. That was late June of 2005 and we

opened on Aug. 2, 2005.”

“The perfect business day is when

someone tells us that a verse of scripture

that was written on the back of their guest

check made an impact on their day or

their life,” said Long.
