nine VFD’s who risk their lives day and

night to protect the property and lives of

of our citizens.

The edition is made possible by the

and professional firms who salute and

honor the dedication of these men and

women firefighters.

Inside this special edition are pictures

of the members of the Lee County fire

departments, along with photos, stories

and other information about each one.

In early days of GVFD,

1897 courthouse fire

battled with hand pumper

The Giddings Volunteer Fire Depart-

ment was organized several years previ-

ous to the fire that destroyed the original

Lee County Courthouse.

And firemen didn’t have to go far with

their limited equipment to reach the

scene of the blaze because the first fire

station was located on the northwest

corner of the courthouse square.

It was late one afternoon in November

1897 just as the courthouse was closing

for the day when the fire broke out.

With not enough water pressure to

reach the top-most portion of the tall
